Mother of the Year

I've lost the battle, given up, thrown in the towel. My fight to keep white bread out of my kids' diet is over. I am surprised I have succeeded this long. They have known about white bread and have bemoaned the fact that I would NEVER cave and actually buy it. They've had it enough to know that they were really missing out on an important rite of childhood. So when my son kept coming home from school with his uneaten sandwich day after day, I had to do something or the poor boy would starve. We tried other menu items for awhile, even different brands of whole wheat bread, but to no avail. I searched the grocery store shelves high and low for the "healthiest" white bread possible. Satisfied with my all-natural, organic choice, I took the leap. I grew up in a house where the bread was always homeade and always whole wheat, so you can understand my anxiety about bread. This was the last stitch of the few healthy foods in the lunch department, so you see why I agonized over this decision. The sandwiches are being eaten with great gusto now. White toast with butter in the morning is such a treat! I might get the Mother of the Year award this year! Well, maybe not quite, I am sure she would never down grade the quality of her bread . Hopefully I will advance to the rank of "Fancy Mom" at the very least. You see, "Fancy Moms pack things like Doritoes, Fruit Roll-Ups, Dunk-A-Roos, and Capri Suns" said my son. It's a slippery slope, but I think I'm headed in the right direction.

You crack me up!! I caved in and started buying potato bread. Even my picky husband (when it comes to "junk" food) will eat a sandwich on it.

The education of the Fancy Mom continues... I am having a good laugh over this one. We've had the same battle here and instead of having nice grainy whole wheat toast for breadfast not to mention an egg or something... no we have down graded all the way to toaster waffles with syrup. Yep. :) On the bright side, she can make her own. :)

You are the total Fancy Mom! AFter being raised on Whole Wheat,I swore I would buy nothing but white bread for my family when I "grew up". You know I have come full circle on that issue. I LOVE white bread...it just does't love me!

It sounds like you made the right bread choice, which should count as automatic placement into Fancy Mom category. No?

wow, you DID last a long time!

I gave up on wheat last month, already. It's been amazing to see him eat the bread with nothing on it and then the insides of the sandwich last. Who knew white bread was that good?

I've always thought of you as fancy. I finally gave up on this one last fall. My kids were simply rejecting wheat bread ALWAYS instead of just the usual sometimes. I finally gave in because it just seems like not fighting about what is in their lunch box makes mornings so much smoother. As a result, they are probably eating way too much crap. Ahh well...

Awesome. I loved Wonderbread as a kid but hate it now. You could look at is as the catalyst for other flavors, like tomatoes. I hated BLT's because I hated tomatoes, but my mom could get me to eat them if she put them between Wonderbread.

Wonderbread is so good. I always prefered white bread. Whole wheat is kind of scratchy. Josh knows the good stuff.

I was personally thrilled when the Arnold Country White bread we all love has come out in a whole grain variety. Still looks white!

We have had many loaves of wonder over the school year as well.

I have also come to realize that packing lunch has turned into me more of "assembling lunch", throwing prepacked foods into her lunchbox and hoping for the best!
